The Harvey Centre offers a welcoming space where you can try new experiences, meet new people, and enjoy a wide range of activities that keep you engaged and active within our local community—both during the day and in the evenings.
Whether you’d like to catch up with friends over coffee and cake, explore a hobby with like minded people, or choose a new read from our Book Shelf library service, we’re here to make it easy and enjoyable.
Getting to us is easy, no matter which end of the village you live in — the bus stops right outside. We also offer ample on site parking, including two disabled bays. The Centre sits conveniently in the heart of Minsterworth on the A48. Bus routes 22 and 23 stop directly at our entrance, with the return stop just opposite, providing regular connections between Gloucester and Coleford.
The Harvey Centre occupies the former Minsterworth Village Primary School, which closed in July 2017. It is named in honour of Frederick William Harvey (1888–1957), the celebrated poet from Minsterworth.

WHAT WE OFFER
We offer a variety of educational, health, and wellbeing opportunities for adults, children, and young people. Some activities are delivered by our dedicated centre volunteers, while others are provided in partnership with local organisations.
Community Café Join us every Wednesday morning in our café for a warm and welcoming get‑together. Our volunteers serve freshly brewed filter coffee and homemade cake between 10am and 12.30pm. Instead of staying at home, come along to chat, connect, and enjoy good company. The cost is just £2.50 for a hot drink and a slice of cake (cash only for now, card payments coming soon). No need to book—simply drop in any Wednesday, everyone is welcome. Local walking groups are also invited, but we ask that they book in advance, especially if they want a different day or time. For more information, please email [email protected]
Mobility Class aimed at the Over 55’s This is a Balance and Mobility Class. This friendly, supportive class accommodates up to 14 participants and takes place every Wednesday at 10.30am for 60 minutes. Many attendees enjoy staying afterwards for a coffee and a slice of cake in our on‑site café.
The class is ideal for anyone looking to build strength, improve stability, and reduce the risk of injuries or falls as they get older. Each session offers a variety of exercises to keep things engaging, and every activity can be adapted to suit different ability levels. The cost is £10 per person. The class is delivered by Farr Physiotherapy, Highnam, Gloucester. For enquiries, please call 01452 234005.

Memory Café The Memory Café is organised by the Mindscape Project with support from volunteers and Artspace Cinderford. It offers a welcoming and safe environment for people living with dementia, along with their partners, families, or carers, to enjoy coffee, crafts, and lunch together. The group meets every four weeks, on the second Tuesday of each month at 11am, here at The Harvey Centre. There is no charge to attend. For further information, please call 01452 750128 or email [email protected]
Community Shed Our Community Shed and repair workshop has been purpose‑built and sits within the grounds of the Centre. It provides a welcoming workshop space where like‑minded people can come together to enjoy practical activities, share skills, exchange knowledge, and experience a renewed sense of purpose and belonging. The project aims to reduce isolation, ease feelings of loneliness, and support men and women in managing mental health challenges while maintaining independence. For further information, please email. [email protected]
Allotments The Harvey Centre has created several allotment plots, which are available to rent, or you can request to be added to our waiting list. Allotments offer a fantastic way to grow your own fresh fruit and vegetables while enjoying healthy outdoor exercise. Allotments also are warm, welcoming spaces where it’s easy to pick up tips and friendly advice from fellow growers. If you’re interested and would like to find out more, please email [email protected]
Art for Wellbeing Each Friday morning, from 10am to 12 noon, we host an Art for Wellbeing class. This friendly session welcomes all experience levels and offers a chance to be creative, learn new skills, socialise, and simply enjoy yourself. The class is supported by Paul Fisher, who gently guides participants and encourages relaxation, confidence, and self‑expression. For further information, please email [email protected]
Book Shelf Library Our Book Shelf Library provides free access to a wide range of adult books, ensuring that reading is available to everyone, regardless of income or background. It’s a calm and welcoming space that helps reduce stress, ease feelings of isolation, and support overall wellbeing. Reading has been shown to improve mood, boost relaxation, strengthen cognitive health, and offer a comforting escape from everyday pressures. Why not pop in, choose a book that inspires you, and enjoy a friendly chat in our café while you’re here. Please see the calendar of opening times in The Villager magazine or contact [email protected] for more information.
Crafternoons are two‑hour craft taster sessions held once a month on a Thursday afternoon at the Centre. Each session is led by a skilled artist, supported by a Centre volunteer, and features a different craft each month. It’s a wonderful opportunity to learn new skills, meet like‑minded people, and enjoy time in a warm, welcoming space. Crafting has been shown to boost wellbeing by reducing stress, improving mood, enhancing focus, and building confidence through hands‑on creativity. It also encourages social connection, which can help reduce feelings of isolation. These sessions are reasonably priced and include all materials and refreshments.
Daycrafts take place on selected Saturdays and run across the day, making them ideal for those who work during the week or for activities that require longer session times. The cost includes lunch and all materials. For further information, please contact Sue Smith on 07776 666222.

Young Peoples’ Hang Out Our new Young Peoples’ Hang Out at the Harvey Centre is an exciting chance for children and parents to come together. For children growing up in rural areas, opportunities to socialise can be limited, so meeting other young people from the village helps them build friendships, grow confidence, and feel more connected to their community.
While the children play and get to know one another, parents can relax with a cuppa and enjoy a friendly chat. We’d love for you to join us, share your ideas, and help shape fun activities for the young people in our area as we work towards creating a regular meet‑up. Feel free to bring along some snacks. Note no unaccompanied child. For further information please email [email protected]

SPACE FOR HIRE The Harvey Centre offers a range of affordable spaces for hire, ideal for educational sessions, wellbeing activities, workshops, and community learning events. Available areas include our main hall, café space, standard toilets, and an accessible toilet with a drop‑down baby‑changing mat. Volunteering Our wonderful volunteers generously give their time and energy to make a real difference to everyone who uses the Centre. Without their dedication, we wouldn’t be able to offer the wide range of educational and wellbeing activities that support adults, children, and young people in our community. We offer a variety of volunteering opportunities across different services, so there’s something to suit every interest and skill set. If you’d like to get involved, we’d be delighted to hear from you and help you find a role that feels right. For further details, please contact E-mail [email protected]
